ONDA Connectivity: the remote control of motorhomes and caravans

With the ONDA Connectivity system, the status of all connected devices can be monitored via the internal data network of the motorhome or caravan. With the app, available for free download on Android and iOS, you can also control individual functions while on the road.

There are many reasons why you might want to access your RV or caravan's on-board system while on the road: turn on the heat before you arrive, quickly turn on the lights and check the temperature of the refrigerator for an evening drink, or check the battery charge level. Whatever the need, ONDA Connectivity provides access to camper or caravan systems wherever you are.

"With ONDA Connectivity, the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes a reality," says Antonio Paoletti, sales manager for the DACH recreational vehicle market. "Just like home automation, our onboard system shares data in the cloud and enables communication with various devices, which can transmit information and receive commands via the app. In essence, you have full control wirelessly, even remotely."

Three data networks, one system: ONDA Connectivity

ONDA Connectivity can seamlessly combine and manage three communication protocols with a single system: the CL-BUS, proprietary to AL-KO VTE, used for all the company's devices; the CI-BUS standard, adopted by many recreational vehicle manufacturers; and the CAN-BUS, employed by motor vehicle manufacturers. In this way, the system can integrate and manage data and functions of a wide range of devices-lights, water tanks, heater, refrigerator, indoor and outdoor temperature, battery, and so on-displaying them graphically and offering related control functions.

Three data networks, one system: ONDA Connectivity

The central element of the ONDA Connectivity system is the ICL12 gateway, which connects the different data management protocols and at the same time enables information transmission via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi network. In addition, thanks to the CI and CAN buses, devices from other suppliers can also be integrated.

Wireless data transmission

Through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interfaces, ONDA Connectivity sends data to control panels installed in the vehicle or to the app on the smartphone. Individual details and functions are made available through dedicated widgets. For those who want to check data or manage functions even outside the range of Bluetooth, the ICL12 gateway can connect to a router/access point with a SIM card. This way, in addition to having Internet access in the vehicle, one can share ONDA Connectivity data in the cloud and control the system remotely, all with a single SIM card.

Data integrity

Data security is guaranteed. Antonio Paoletti: "We subjected the system to cybersecurity tests conducted by a specialized company and passed them successfully. Bluetooth connection is made through a pairing process, while the Wi-Fi network is always protected by a personal password. To register for the cloud, one needs to create a simple account with a username and password."

Interacting with the camper

The possible applications of ONDA Connectivity are virtually limitless. For example, it is possible to check the location of the RV using the GPS module built into the ICL12 or use the leveling sensors to show the exact degree to which the vehicle is tilted. Antonio Paoletti: "In the next phase we will implement voice control and evaluate how artificial intelligence can further improve safety and user experience." With this development perspective, AL-KO VTE proves that ONDA Connectivity is truly future-proof.

Already available for OEMs, coming soon to the aftermarket as well

ONDA Connectivity is already available to recreational vehicle manufacturers as original equipment. Paoletti: "We want to offer even owners of older motorhomes and caravans the opportunity to enter the digital age and take advantage of smart connectivity soon." The focus is particularly on vehicles that already integrate technologies from AL-KO VTE. To give a preview of the full functionality, the app offers a demo mode, which illustrates the full potential of the system.

Collaborate across team and company boundaries.

The implementation of ONDA Connectivity required significant effort. We utilized the know-how of the entire Group, both in hardware and software development. To do so, we combined the capabilities of our three electronics divisions-CBE, Nordelettronica, and Toptron-to create a fully integrated system. In addition, we collaborated with external partners specializing in app development, graphical user interfaces, and cybersecurity. This has been and continues to be a challenging project that further strengthens our expertise.
